Is comfort food calling your name? We’ve entered the time of year where certain dishes hit the spot on a cold winter’s night. Pepperoni Pie is a dish that is the definition of comfort food.

What exactly is Pepperoni Pie? It’s a deep dish pie comprised of a shell made with cooked noodles, then layered with cheese, meat sauce, more cheese, and pepperonis. Sounds good, right?

This recipe for Pepperoni Pie was inspired by a recipe called “Why Not Spaghetti Pie”, that my mother-in-law, Nancy, shared with me. I believe the “Spaghetti Pie” recipe was clipped from The Birmingham News in the late 70’s or early 80’s and calls for using a microwave for most of the cooking process. Microwaves were novelties back then, similar to the instapot of today. So it’s no surprise the OG recipe took much longer than it should have (no offense to microwaves and/or instapots. I have both, and I think they both do certain things very well.)

I make my pepperoni pie on a stove top and in an oven. Keep reading to see how I make Pepperoni Pie:

For the Meat Sauce

In a skillet, over medium-high heat, brown your ground beef (drain any excess grease). Add chopped onion, bell pepper, and garlic to the skillet with the ground beef and continue cooking over medium-high heat until onions are translucent. Add tomato paste, water, oregano and salt to the skillet. Mix all ingredients together until a sauce forms. Remove skillet from the heat.

How to build the pepperoni Pie

Spread 1 cup of cottage cheese evenly over the top of the shell made of cooked noodles. Next, spread the meat sauce evenly over the top of the cottage cheese layer. Top the meat sauce with shredded mozzarella. Top the pie with pepperoni slices.

Bake the Pepperoni Pie on a baking sheet in an oven preheated to 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until the cheese begins to bubble. Broil for an additional 2-3 minutes. Remove the pepperoni pie from the oven. Allow the pie to stand for 15 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley.

Add bread and a side salad and dinner is served. Pepperoni Pie remains a fan favorite in our home. This recipe bundles spaghetti and pepperoni pizza into one comforting dish. I hope you’ll try making it!

XOXO,

Sally

Is comfort food calling your name? We’ve entered the time of year where certain dishes hit the spot on a cold winter’s night. Pepperoni Pie is a dish that brings all the comfort to our home. What exactly is Pepperoni Pie? It’s a deep dish pie comprised of a shell made with cooked noodles, then layered with cheese, meat sauce, more cheese, and pepperonis. YUMMY!!

Ingredients

  • 8 oz of Angel Hair Noodles, cooked according to package directions
  • 2 tbsp butter, at room temp.
  • ½ cup of grated or shaved Parmesan Cheese
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • 1 lb of ground beef
  • ½ cup of chopped onion
  • ¼ cup of chopped green bell pepper
  • 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped
  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • ½ cup of water
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • 1 cup cottage cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 12 pepperoni slices

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a 10 inch deep dish pie plate with cooking spray. Cook noodles according to package directions.
  2. Stir together cooked noodles, butter, beaten egg, and parmesan and pour the noodle mixture into the deep dish pie plate. Use the bottom of a measuring cup or a spoon to form the noodles into a pie shell then set aside.
  4. Spread 1 cup of cottage cheese evenly over the top of the shell made of cooked noodles. Next, spread the meat sauce evenly over the top of the cottage cheese layer. Top the meat sauce with shredded mozzarella. Top the pie with pepperoni slices.
  5. Bake the Pepperoni on a baking sheet in an oven preheated to 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until the cheese begins to bubble. Broil for an additional 2-3 minutes. Remove the pepperoni pie from the oven. Allow the pie to stand for 15 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley.
  6. Recipe Notes: For a shortcut on making the meat sauce, use a jarred spaghetti sauce and omit the tomato paste and water from the ingredients. After you have browned your beef and sauteed your veggies, add in a 1 cup jarred sauce and mix ingredients well before removing the skillet from the heat. Use an 8x8 inch oven-safe dish, such as a pyrex, if you don't have a deep dish pie plate at home.
